Kate Lapides is a freelance photographer and writer based in Breckenridge, Colorado. She studied photojournalism at the University of Colorado in Boulder and at the Salt Center for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine, and graduated with a B.A. in Humanities from Fort Lewis College in Durango.

After internships at several newspapers in the San Francisco Bay area, Lapides embarked on a freelance career in 1997. Since that time, she has split her year photographing commercial work and weddings in Colorado and photographing social documentary work for non-profit humanitarian groups such as Save The Children, Interplast/Ronald McDonald House Charities, and The International Rescue Committee in Africa, Asia, Central and South America and the rural U.S.

Lapides is a two-time recipient of an Individual Artist's Grant from the COLORADO COUNCIL ON THE ARTS for her work creating community photography projects for underserved children in rural Colorado and reservation communities. Recent collaborative photographic/multimedia projects she has created have received grants from The Big Sky Institute of Montana, The Maine Women's Fund and The Maine Humanities Council. Her photographs have been exhibited at galleries in Colorado, Rhode Island, Texas and Maine and shown at humanitarian and mountain film festivals in Telluride and Rhode Island. She is a member of Blue Earth Alliance, Fotovision Cooperative and the National Press Photographers Association.
