The photographs in "Gift of Healing" document the work of the humanitarian non-profit organization Interplast. Interplast's volunteer physicians provide free reconstructive surgery for children in developing countries worldwide. They also provide advanced training to surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses in the host countries they work in, to assist their colleagues in attaining the medical independence to treat these conditions on their own. The photographs in this portfolio were taken during seven different trips with Interplast, documenting their work in Brazil, Ecuador, Honduras, Laos and Peru. The children shown in the images are struggling with congenital disfigurements such as cleft lips and palates and accidental burns. Many of them live in small villages where no medical care is available; others come from impoverished families who are not able to afford the medical care available in urban regions. The surgeries are often life-changing for the children, often allowing them to participate fully in society for the first time. |
